I bet most students have seen Dexter's Lab on the Cartoon Network. In
this fun hands on program, your students will be able to be a Mad Scientist
themselves. This program involves a look at some of the more visual chemical
reactions. But, if visual is not your thing, then you should be warned to
Cover your ears, this program can get loud!! Don't worry, its all in good
fun designed to show that science can be fun as well as educational.
Most people have seen the movie Terminator II where the terminator becomes
frozen in liquid nitrogen. In this chilling program your students will explore
what would happen if the liquid nitrogen fell on them. As one of MAEA's most
popular programs it involves experiments that look at the various industrial
uses of liquid nitrogen and other cryogenic techniques.
The definition of a Polymer is: a compound or series of compounds that consist essentially of repeating structural units So what's an example of a polymer? They are many things around us, like the Polyester clothes we wear and the Jell we eat. In these fun programs, the students get to make many different types of polymers, some familiar and others not so familiar.
1. The Glue Factory: All Grades, AP, PD
This fun program requires the students to employ a talent that is hard to teach, "creativity." It also helps students practice the attributes that employers look for namely, working well with others, and problem solving. Students use concurrent engineering to create, package, price and construct an advertising campaign for the polymer products they have made. Finally, the students will be required to present their products to the rest of their class mates.
2. Slime Time: Grades 6-12
This fun program requires students to make the ultimate slime. Most people know that slime will ooze through your fingers. Students will make their own slime and then compare it to their fellow students' slime to find the one that will sag the most without breaking. Texture, color and density are manipulated by the students as they mix the ingredients. So come on, and lets mix it up!!
3. Hard Times: Grades 6-12
There are many types of polymers in the world. The Glue Factory and Slime Time are often times soft and pliable polymers. In this fun program students will Make It Last Forever as they create a polymer that is hard as a rock and clear as glass.
In its strictest sense, alchemy is the pseudo-science that concerns attempts
to transform base metals such as lead or copper into silver or gold. This
program looks at the lasting legacy of the original alchemist and some experiments
that stem from their original work.
You can't go into a department store without going through or around the
perfume or cologne counters. This program involves an in-depth look at
how perfumes and colognes are made. The students have the opportunity to
make their own scent that can be labeled and given as a gift. This is an
excellent program before holidays.
We gain knowledge through our experiences. We then take that knowledge
and apply it to other situations; this process is called learning. This fun
program involves learning through investigation of a typical cold remedy found
in most homes.
Solids, liquids, and gases. This program is designed to show the different properties associated with each. Students are encouraged to participate in some experiments to enhance their understanding of the states of matter, and how matter changes from one state to the other. Other states of matter are also examined.
